The Submariner is one of maybe a dozen references I'd call a proportions benchmark after cataloguing over 4,000 watches — 41mm in steel with a 300m rating that's engineering overkill for anything recreational scuba actually demands, and that overkill is exactly what pushes its durability score to the top of my database. At $12,880 it isn't cheap, but the black dial, ceramic bezel, and Oyster bracelet are executed to a standard I rarely see matched even in watches costing twice as much. On my 35-axis scale it scores near-perfect for legibility and wrist presence, and mediocre for value-for-money — which is the honest trade you're making here.
