Sinn
For those who value function over prestige.

Sinn has built German tool watches in Frankfurt since 1961, engineering pilot, dive, and mission-timer watches around functional problems — fogging, corrosion, scratching — rather than around a house design language. Its cases are hardened, its dials are dehumidified, and its testing standards are often stricter than the industry's own.
The Frankfurt tool-watch specialist built around Tegiment case hardening, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology, and EZM mission timers developed with German rescue and police units — engineering substance sold direct, well below Swiss tool-watch pricing.

About Sinn
Sinn was founded in 1961 as Helmut Sinn Spezialuhren, named after its founder, a former pilot and flight instructor who built pilot's watches, chronographs, and dive watches sold directly rather than through retailers. In 1994, engineer Lothar Schmidt — previously a production manager at IWC — acquired the company and renamed it Sinn Spezialuhren GmbH, shifting it from a value-oriented reseller into an engineering-led manufacturer in its own right.
Tegiment, Ar-Dehumidifying, and Hydro Technology
Sinn's identity is functional rather than aesthetic: Tegiment surface hardening treats case exteriors for scratch resistance well beyond an untreated case of the same steel, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology fills the case with dried argon instead of ordinary air to stop internal fogging during temperature swings, and Hydro technology fills the case entirely with oil so it can be taken to extreme depths without fogging or crystal implosion — used on Hydro variants of the U-series dive watches, such as the U50 HYDRO.
The EZM Mission Timers and TESTAF
The EZM line — Einsatzzeitmesser, German for 'mission timer' — was developed directly with German police, rescue, and special-forces units for real operational use, not as a marketing story. Under Lothar Schmidt, Sinn also co-developed TESTAF, among the first technical testing standards for pilot's watches, formalized as DIN 8330 — an attempt to define what a pilot's watch should actually be able to do, rather than just how it should look.
Where Sinn Sits Today
Sinn still sells largely direct rather than through a wide dealer network, keeping prices well below Swiss tool-watch peers with comparable engineering ambitions. It's aimed at buyers who want the case-hardening, anti-fogging, and testing-standard substance of a genuine tool watch, and are willing to trade brand recognition and resale liquidity for it.
Main collections
556
Sinn's accessible everyday line — a plain three-hand steel watch with the same case-hardening options as the rest of the catalog, priced as an entry point rather than a lesser watch.
U1
Sinn's flagship professional dive watch, machined from a submarine-hull steel alloy and offered with Tegiment hardening — built for real underwater use rather than as a lifestyle diver.
103
Sinn's pilot chronograph, tracing back to the brand's origins supplying cockpit instruments — a direct, function-first take on the aviation chronograph.
EZM
The Einsatzzeitmesser line, developed directly with German police, rescue, and special-forces units for real operational use rather than as a marketing story.
Notable models
Sinn 103 St DIAPAL
The pilot chronograph fitted with Sinn's DIAPAL escapement treatment, engineered to reduce the need for lubrication at the balance and pallet fork.
Sinn U50 HYDRO
A compact dive watch with an oil-filled case — Sinn's Hydro technology — eliminating internal fogging and crystal stress at depth.
Sinn 856 UTC
A dive-watch case paired with a UTC hand for a second time zone, built for buyers who want one tool watch that covers travel and water resistance.
