It isn't. A chronometer is simply a watch movement that has passed an independent accuracy test. Nothing about its design, materials, or complications changes — only its proven timekeeping precision does. The word has history: originally, chronometers were ultra-precise marine clocks used for navigation at sea. Today, in Switzerland, the term is legally protected — only movements that have passed official certification may be marketed as chronometers. COSC stands for Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres — the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, an independent non-profit body headquartered in La Chaux-de-Fonds and accredited by the Swiss Accreditation Service. Each movement runs for 15 days across five positions and three temperatures (8°C, 23°C, and 38°C), following the ISO 3159 standard.
To earn the “Certified Chronometer” title, a mechanical movement must stay within tight limits on five criteria: an average daily rate of −4 to +6 seconds; a mean variation in daily rates under 2 seconds; a difference between horizontal and vertical positions of −6 to +8 seconds; a rate change of under 0.6 seconds per day from an 8°C temperature shift; and rate resumption within ±5 seconds after testing.
Certification is rarer than the marketing implies. Only around 15% of all exported Swiss watches — and roughly 40% of Swiss mechanical wristwatches — actually carry the COSC label. COSC issues more than 2 million certificates a year with a pass rate of roughly 94%; the real bottleneck isn't difficulty, but that most brands simply don't submit every movement for testing.
COSC sets the floor, not the ceiling. Several brands test beyond it, on their own terms. Rolex requires every movement to pass COSC first, then re-tests the fully cased watch — the movement installed in its final case — to a tighter internal “Superlative Chronometer” standard of ±2 seconds per day, versus COSC's −4/+6.
Omega's Master Chronometer, certified with METAS (Switzerland's Federal Institute of Metrology), also starts from a COSC-passed movement, then runs eight further tests on the assembled watch over 10 days — including accuracy of 0/+5 seconds per day and resistance to a 15,000-gauss magnetic field, roughly the field strength of a hospital MRI scanner. COSC, by contrast, includes no magnetic resistance testing at all, which makes METAS a genuine differentiator for daily wear around electronics.
Grand Seiko opted out of COSC decades ago in favor of its own in-house “Grand Seiko Standard”: 17 days of testing across six positions and three temperatures — one more position than COSC — with a target of −3 to +5 seconds per day in static mean daily rate. The pattern is clear: COSC is a respected third-party stamp, but brands with their own labs increasingly layer stricter, house-specific testing on top of — or instead of — it.
Honestly, for most people, not much. Even a non-certified modern mechanical movement typically runs within 10–20 seconds a day — imperceptible in daily life unless you're setting your watch against an atomic clock. Certification's real value is quality control: it's documented proof that your specific movement was individually tested and regulated, not merely assumed to perform to spec. That documentation matters for resale value and buyer confidence, particularly in the mid-range, where “COSC-certified” is used to differentiate an otherwise similar movement from a competitor's.
The dial is the fastest tell: watches with COSC-certified movements are usually marked “Chronometer” below the brand name — which is precisely all that word signals. Rolex prints “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” on the dial. Omega Master Chronometer models are marked accordingly, and you can verify an individual watch's test results by serial number on Omega's website.
