I've measured dive-watch specs — water resistance ratings, bezel action, lume duration, case toughness — across thousands of catalogued references, and the truth about a dive watch only really shows up once you get past the spec sheet: a bezel that turns beautifully in a store display case can jam the moment it's actually turned with wet, gloved hands, and a dial that's perfectly legible under store lighting can disappear at 20 metres, where the water has already filtered out most of the red light. Look for a screwed-down crown, which seals more reliably against water pressure than a push-pull crown, and check whether the case back is screwed rather than snapped on, since a snap-back case is a weaker seal under sustained pressure. None of this is exotic information, but I'm consistently surprised how many people buy a watch labeled as a diver without checking any of it.
One more thing amateurs get talked into paying extra for: a helium escape valve. Unless you're doing saturation diving in a commercial pressurized chamber, which essentially none of us are, that feature is solving a problem you will never have. It's a legitimate engineering feature for a narrow professional use case, not a reason to pick one recreational dive watch over another.

A steel-bracelet dive watch with a clean dial genuinely works in business-casual settings — it's one of the most office-appropriate looks in the entire archetype once you swap the rubber strap for steel. Save the rubber-strap, heavily-lumed, high-contrast versions for genuinely casual weekends, since they read more overtly sporty. The versatility is the whole reason this archetype crossed over from a tool for a niche activity into one of the most-worn watch styles in general, and I don't think that crossover is an accident or a marketing trick — the same durability that makes a watch survive a dive also makes it survive a chaotic Tuesday.
For an actual dive, the Seiko above is the one I'd point someone toward — accessible enough that a scratch from a boat ladder isn't a source of anxiety, with specs that genuinely hold up at depth. For everything else, something like the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is worth saving toward one day, less because it offers extra capability and more because it's the watch that started this entire category, and there's real value in owning a piece of that history once it's earned. Both instincts are honest, and you don't have to pick only one.
